Listen Up

There's music everywhere; you don't even have to look for it: festive songs in the marts, techno tracks from the delivery rider, campaign jingles in the MRT, retro tunes in the taxis, or rock numbers in the café. There's so much music out there – much of it unfiltered and uninspiring – and it can all be improved.

Listening to music in a shared environment can encourage teamwork, break ice, reduce stress and act as a common source of enjoyment. Music lifts, it is a mood elevator, and curated playlists can be a part of the holistic design of an establishment, whether it's an office, hotel, restaurant or clinic.

Curated playlists for your workspace.

Research has shown that music can positively influence workplace productivity: Studies found that people who listen to music while working on repetitive tasks complete them faster and make fewer errors. Background music can stimulate the brain, creating a state of flow that enhances focus.

Curated music at restaurants and bars.

Research has shown that music triggers the release of dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters associated with positive feelings. This improvement in mood can lead to higher levels of job satisfaction and a more positive workplace culture, not to mention rocking music really lights up an establishment.

Curated mood at the clinic and spa.

Research has shown that listening to the appropriate music can reduce cortisol levels, the body's stress hormone. Studies show that lower stress levels can lead to a more relaxed environment for people at a clinic or spa.

As a music connoisseur, mood maker and DJ, this is what I aim to do: make your world a better space to tune into. My role involves crafting immersive auditory experiences tailored to specific themes, environments or client needs. Here's a detailed overview of what I do for you:

Consultation

• I start with in-depth discussions to understand the client's vision, target audience, and the desired emotional impact. This might involve asking about the intended use of the soundscape — whether it's for a brand, an event or a specific space (clinic, hotel, office).

Theme Development

• Based on our initial consultation, I help develop a theme or concept that encapsulates the client's message or atmosphere. This could be anything from serene, comforting sounds for a wellness retreat to old-school jazz scores for a hotel lobby.

Research and Curation

• I sift through vast music and sound recordings libraries, selecting tracks that align with the established theme. This includes everything from ambient music and nature sounds to genre-specific tracks.

Editing and Arrangement

• The selected tracks and sound elements are arranged into a cohesive soundscape, focusing on timing, transitions and pacing to ensure the soundscape flows naturally and intuitively.

Presentation and Playback

• The bespoke playlist is presented and streamed at the location or event. I conduct playback sessions to evaluate how the soundscape feels in the intended environment. This allows for adjustments based on acoustics and audience receptivity. I revise as needed to fine-tune the experience to the client's satisfaction.

Ongoing Collaboration

• For long-term projects, I may provide ongoing updates or seasonal soundscapes, keeping the auditory experience fresh and engaging for repeat audiences. I aim to create soundscapes that evoke emotions, enhance the design elements, and elevate the overall holistic experience for listeners.

It starts with a conversation, and we’ll take it from there.

Let's talk.

Check Out Some Playlists I've Curated:

Anti:Dote 10th Anniversary Party 2024: I DJ'ed at their party, and this playlist is an approximation of the tunes that were played that night.

Maison Perrier Party: For their recent launch party, curated the music for two floors and DJ'ed on a third floor. It's 'French Chic With a Pop'.

Fung Kee Hotdog:  Curated 400 upbeat indie rock and electro pop songs for a vibrant hot dog/cocktail chain.

27 Songs From Club 27: Compilation of songs by artists who died when they were 27 years old. (Cobain, Winehouse, Joplin et al. There' a lot of them!)

Cccovers: 350+ cover versions. [Fun Fact: The Beatles' Yesterday is the most covered song of all time.]

Marisa Monte: Every song sung by Brazil's most acclaimed modern female singer, including everything done with her band Tribalistas.

DJ + Curator + Tastemaker

David Fuhrmann-Lim

Editorially, I've been a writer and editor for many years: I've held an Editor-in-Chief position and have written for international guides and magazines. I'm an award-winning author and prize-winning playwright, but my love has always been music, music, music. I worked in MTV Asia (Promos Director) when it launched in Singapore, and have also been DJing at festivals, bars, launches and parties.

A lot of my spare time is spent making playlists just for fun. Here's one for a recent photo exhibition called 'The Chemistry Between Us'.
